9-Year-Old Author Creates Book Series to Teach His ‘Stupid Parents’ a Lesson

Health educator StacyLyn Goulding and her therapist husband Zach love that their son has created his own series of graphic novels. They just didn't realize that they would become the villains.

In one of the books, 9-year-old JR transformed his mom and dad into a terrible twosome — the "stupid parents" — who try to foil the plans of the heroic protagonist — "Emerald Warrior" — in a book called (you guessed it!) "Emerald Warrior vs. Stupid Parents."

"We don't say the word 'stupid' in our house, which is exactly why he used it here," laughs Utah mom StacyLyn. She shared JR's stories on her Instagram page .

JR wrote the "Stupid Parents" book late one night after his parents had to "correct a behavior," StacyLyn explains. "He was mad and started crying, and then he said, 'I'm going to go and write a book about you guys to embarrass you!'"

In the story, the Stupid Parents couldn't stop bossing kids around. Then Emerald Warrior arrives on the scene and (spoiler alert!) tosses the Stupid Parents in the ocean.

StacyLyn was lucky enough to be featured in yet another installment of the series, titled, "Emerald Warrior vs. No Mom."

This book was prompted by JR's desperation to use a restaurant gift card he had been given for his birthday. Because the family was busy, StacyLyn had to tell JR that no, they couldn't drop their plans and go out to eat.

"I guess I said 'no' too many times and he had to do something about it," says StacyLyn.

In this book, Emerald Warrior stops the car that No Mom is driving and sprayed her with "Yes Spray." Then every time her kids ask a question, she says, "Yes," instead of, "No."

JR created this particular book at the tail end of spring break, which was filled with swimming and hiking and parties. "If you only knew your mom isn't a 'No Mom'!" says StacyLyn.

"We think it's really funny, but also we think it's a great outlet to be creative and to use his brain to share his frustrations with us," she continues. "When he brought me the 'No Mom' book, he watched me read it aloud, and I was laughing. His face had so much pride. He loved he made me laugh. Even though he makes them in anger, he also loves our reaction."

JR, who created a number of Emerald Warrior books in rapid succession, "has kind of a rhythm," his mom says. "There’s always five pages. He knows there needs to be a climax and an arc."

JR has threatened to write more about his villainous parents if they continue to cross the line.

"He says there's more in the works," StacyLyn says ominously.
