I ate Oreo Reese’s so you don’t have to (not to be confused with Reese’s Oreos)
The new Oreo Reese’s (not to be confused with the new Reese’s Oreo ) are delicious.
Of course they are. They’re Reese’s with crunchy bits of Oreo in them.
But in a weird twist, they’re not even the best Oreo-based Peanut Butter Cups that Reese’s has released in the past decade.
No, that honor belongs to the ”Crunchy Cookie” Peanut Butter Cups released back in 2017 . Those came in both standard and Big Cup varieties, with the Big Cup still holding a legendary status.
Back then, it was a straightforward Reese’s Cup with unbranded “Oreo” bits mixed in. This new, officially licensed partnership? It’s good, but needlessly complicated.
The outer coating it half-milk chocolate and half-white chocolate. I’m guessing it’s to represent the creme filling in the Oreo.
I get it. But the inclusion of the less popular new product really muddles what should have been a slam dunk.
It’s like if Blink-182 took the stage with Paramore and you got all excited about the once-in-a-lifetime combination. Except when they started playing, half the set was from Hayley Williams’ new solo album that you keep forgetting to listen to.
Oreo Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups | Review
This two-way partnership between Reese’s and Oreo has been fun as they’ve found ways to incorporate the other product into their own sweet creations.
However, it’s weird that both companies are pretending that this has never happened before.
In a press release , a Hershey executive described it as “two legendary brands coming together to create something absolutely unprecedented.”
OK, fine, the 2017 “Oreo” Reese’s Cups wasn’t an official crossover. But the 2014 “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo” cookies in 2014? Those were officially licensed.
Oreo and Reese’s are just going back to the well to get another pop of marketing buzz and get us to go buy them.
Here’s the worst part: It’s an awesome plan, it’s working and I have completely fallen for it.
What does it taste like?
Overall, these are really fun. You get a sweet rush of dueling chocolates before getting into a little of the familiar peanut butter hum and crunchy bits of cookie.
The Oreo bits create a really fun texture inside the cup. It’s reminiscent of a cookies and creme Hershey bar, giving that grainy, sweet little crumble.
You also get bends of flavor from both types of chocolate involved. The milk chocolate gives that familiar hum while the white chocolate has a little bit of a hazier sheen.
The white chocolate and crunchy Oreo bits are front-and-center flavor-wise. Unfortunately, that means the peanut butter takes a bit of a backseat in this cup.
So is it any good?
It’s good, but it could have been better.
I’m not a huge fan of the white chocolate in here. But I guess they really wanted to reflect the creme filling of the Oreo.
I also really wish that it came in Big Cup form. That would have allowed the peanut butter to share the stage with all the new Oreo-based bells and whistles.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I wish they just re-released the “Crunchy Cookie” Reese’s Big Cup from 2017 and slapped “Oreo” on the label.
