I ate Thanksgiving Oreos so you don’t have to, with the worst flavor I’ve ever had

Nick O'Malley
5 min read

The only downside of the Thanksgiving Dinner Oreos was the flavor, the smell, the price, the overall experience of eating them and the depraved echo of evil flavors that continue to haunt my body.

The two positives were: A) they came in a cool tin, and B) they're sold out and people can't buy them anymore.

Over the past 11 years, I've tasted and ranked over 100 flavors of Oreo. Until this week, the honor of "Worst Oreo ever" belonged to Banana Split. It's had that title locked down since my first-ever review in 2014.

But as of now, we have a new rock bottom. The worst Oreo I've ever had — by far — is now Turkey & Stuffing.

The worst part is that Creamed Corn isn't too far behind.

OREOiD Thanksgiving Dinner Tin | Review

At this point, you're probably asking yourself one of many reasonable questions: "Why?" "Who bought this?" "What the heck is this?" "Why?" "Will someone be going to jail?" "Did you actually spend money on this?" and of course, "Why?"

This was a rare "flavor experiment" where Oreo put a limited batch of cookies on the market to "invite fans to join a bold taste journey and share their honest feedback."

Boy, do I have feedback. But before that, let's meet the six flavors included in the tin:

  • Pumpkin Pie

  • Sweet Potato

  • Caramel Apple Pie

  • Creamed Corn

  • Cranberry Sauce

  • Turkey & Stuffing

These cookies are covered in some sort of white chocolate-esque hardened flavor goo. Inside, it's an Oreo dystopia. The cookies and creme filling all look like normal Oreos. But they appear to have the bizarre flavors worked in.

Then there was the price. For a metal tin of 12 cookies (two of each flavor), it cost $19.99, which was bad enough. Then Oreo added on $11.17 for shipping.

I would have been better off lighting my money on fire. At least that way it would have brought some warmth into my life.

What do they taste like?

The moment I opened the tin, I knew I was in trouble. The smell of these cookies hurt my brain. It was like a mixture of a Yankee Candle store, a stale bowl of Werther's Originals and bathroom cleaner.

Pumpkin Pie— These are cloyingly sweet with a pop of pumpkin pie-adjacent flavoring. I want to be clear: It's not pumpkin pie spice. It's straight-up industrial nutmeg goo.

Caramel Apple Pie— They certainly hit the namesake flavor with a thin, tinny sweetness that rattles around between a jolt of caramel and a chemically induced round of apple. The cookie really helps mellow the whole thing out. It's milky sweet and a sugar rush, but fun — not terrible.

Cranberry Sauce— Despite my usual aversion to real cranberry sauce, this is actually kind of good. Amid all the waxy fudge coating, you get vivid waves of tart flavor. It's almost like eating a Sour Patch Kid.

This is actually a really cool Oreo concept. The specific flavors are a bit too wild and off-putting. It's the Oreo equivalent of a Warhead. There's a pleasant part, but you're going to have to buckle in and ride out the sour portion to get there.

Sweet Potato— Initially, I was afraid of this flavor. It ended up being the best of the bunch.

It's cinnamon-forward, with more caramel than the caramel one. If they told me this one was "Cinnamon Roll" or "Pecan Pie," I'd believe it. It's a pretty well-balanced sweetness with a buttery hum.

Creamed Corn— Oh no. It tastes exactly like corn — too much like corn. It's like eating a spoonful of canned corn and raw butter. It's a cross between eating a candle and corn on the cob. It's remarkably accurate, and that's the scary part.

Turkey & Stuffing— This smells like a plate of Thanksgiving dinner and dog food.

You can actually taste the poultry, gravy and stuffing flavor coming through. It's sweet but also savory in a way that's been artificially induced.

These are not flavors that humankind should have introduced into the world.

This is an abomination.

Help.

My brain is on fire.

This is like eating a gravy lollipop.

It's like someone frosted a chocolate/stuffing cake.

My mouth feels like a trash bag that should have gone outside three days ago.

It tastes like an abandoned broom.

I feel like I just licked a garage floor.

I feel like this is going to come up at my blood work when I go to the doctor. The Red Cross should refuse all my donations for the next 10 years just to be safe.

I should be banned from my own family's Thanksgiving.

So are they any good?

Overall? No. Kill it with fire.

Tha Caramel Apple Pie and Sweeet Potato Oreos are not bad.

Everything else? Launch it into the sun.
