What Does Pluto Represent in Astrology?

Pluto is known as the planet of death and rebirth, associated with intensity, transformation, and raw, unfiltered truth. With its soulful magnetism, we turn to this planet to explore our inner selves. It guides us to our psyche, unconscious and innermost experiences.

Destruction can be life-giving, as it enables us to let go of what no longer serves us. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, this archetypal planetary energy empowers us to shed our old selves—like a snake shedding its skin—enabling constant evolution and growth. While Pluto was recently termed a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union in Prague, its influence is not diminished for modern astrologers.

Pluto's Role in Mythology and Symbolism

Pluto, the king of the underworld, was the ancient Romans' embodiment of death itself. Known as Hades in Greek mythology, this deity was feared by mortals for his power and authority. He ruled over the earth's riches and its prosperity, holding the delicate balance between life and death in his hands.

Pluto is known for his abduction of Proserpina, which eventually led to their marriage. Proserpina, the daughter of Ceres, the goddess of harvests, was heartbroken when she was taken away in the god of the dead's chariot. This event resulted in a long winter that devastated the earth and destroyed crops.

In response, Jupiter , the king of the gods, intervened to broker a compromise. For six months of the year, Proserpina returns to the underworld to be with Hades, becoming the goddess of the dead alongside her husband.

During her absence, Ceres grieves, and winter prevails. For the remaining six months, Proserpina lives with her mother, Ceres, and the earth flourishes in celebration of the harvest. Many believe that Proserpina's abduction serves as a metaphor for death and grief.
