No, Burger King , you cannot become Starbucks just by putting cold foam on iced coffee . It's the same as me trying to become a marathon runner in a day by spending $1,000 on running shoes, a Fitbit and one of those crazy hydration vests.

Does it make the coffee taste better? Sure. But it's a bit like putting a delightful layer of frosting on an old cupcake that's been left abandoned in the office break room since the company holiday party.

The topping tastes good. But there's really no getting past the neglected brown stuff underneath.

Burger King Cold Foam Coffee | Review

Burger King recently reminded the world that, yes, they do serve coffee when they introduced a new lineup of iced coffee drinks with cold foam. The iced coffee is available in three varieties:

Black— Just a black iced coffee topped with cold foam

Vanilla— Iced coffee with cream and "vanilla-flavored syrup" topped with cold foam

Mocha— Iced coffee with cream and "mocha flavor" topped with cold foam

The most bizarre part of this iced coffee boondoggle is that select Burger King locations also have "plain" as an option.

A "plain" iced coffee is just coffee and cream without any flavoring topped with cold foam.

So why the heck is it in limited locations? As the menu shows, the mocha and vanilla versions already have cream in them. They can't just add cream to coffee?

Explain yourself, Burger King.

What does it taste like?

The cold foam is nice. The coffee is pretty rough.

I knew going into this not to expect much from the coffee. Last year, I ranked every major drive-thru coffee available in Massachusetts . Out of 12 chains, Burger King came in 10th, just beating out Taco Bell and Wendy's.

The flavorings and cold foam do improve each of the coffee options, but that's not saying much.

Black Iced Coffee with Cold Foam— This coffee is a watery, bitter paradox. It somehow tastes both watered-down and overly strong. The coffee is roasted into oblivion, leaving it was a super bitter, burnt taste.

This is what a black iced coffee tastes like to people who don't like coffee.

I like coffee. I am appalled.

Mixing the cold foam takes the edge off. But after that, it really doesn't taste like anything.

It's like tasting a cloud, which sounds great at first. Then you remember that clouds are just puffs of dirty water vapor.

Vanilla Iced Coffee with Cold Foam— This tastes less like vanilla and more like raw sugar. The flavor reminds me of those vanilla-flavored Tootsie Rolls , except worse.

The syrupy flavor carries a sharp sweetness that punches through all the other flavors

Once you mix the foam in, it's not bad. The overall drink becomes creamy with the coffee taste nowhere to be found. This is candy coffee.

Mocha Iced Coffee with Cold Foam— Do not let this get watered down. When it does, it tastes like watery chocolate.

There's really no actual coffee flavor here. It's more like a thin mixture of coffee milk and chocolate milk.

So is it any good?

No. Get coffee somewhere else.

I mean, if you really want cold foam with your Burger King order, I can't stop you from ordering it. But don't complain to me if the coffee part tastes bad.

The final word

Whether it's a Whopper or coffee, never order the black version of anything from Burger King.

The coffee is bad. The Black Whopper ? Even worse .
