Growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, was an absolute treat. I got to enjoy some of the best-sounding music, be surrounded by rich culture, and indulge in insanely delicious food from such a young age. It really did spoil me. Because what do you mean, not everyone has gumbo and jambalaya for dinner on a regular basis?

One chef I know who shares this same deep appreciation for the Big Easy and Cajun cooking is Emeril Lagasse. He just posted a recipe for the perfect tomato sandwich , and I have to say that his recipe is right on the money. Here's how to make a traditional Southern tomato sandwich.

What Makes Chef Emeril Lagasse's Tomato Sandwich So Amazing

What makes this recipe so good is just how simple it is. The three main ingredients are some good white bread, mayonnaise, and "the best tomato that you can possibly find." When you're only using a few ingredients, you really have to take Emeril's word for it and truly find the best. That means I'm using Duke's Mayonnaise. Some of the comments on his TikTok video agree: "Gotta be Duke's mayo," one person wrote. Its notorious "twang" from two kinds of vinegar and extra egg yolks really sets it apart.

While the summer season is quickly coming to a close, there's still time to get your hands on fresh, juicy tomatoes. Summer tomatoes are a delicacy, and I love highlighting them with just a pinch of salt and black pepper to let their natural flavors shine. I completely agree with Emeril's closing statement in the video, "Now that's a snack." A tomato sandwich is the perfect bite to have any time of the day, whether that is just for a snack or for a summertime dinner when there's no way you're eating anything as hot as it is outside.

If you've never tried a simple tomato sandwich for yourself, then I implore you to follow Emeril's recipe. After all, one commenter did write, "That is the perfect Southern tomato sandwich." You seriously can't knock this Southern sandwich without trying it yourself. And don't forget to hit your food with a little "Bam!"
