Basic economy, main cabin, Comfort+, premium economy, first class… and sometimes even versions of those within versions. Legacy airlines like Delta Air Lines, Unitedand Americanare slicing the cabin thinner than ever, while budget carriers and challengers like JetBluerace to offer perks without losing price-sensitive travelers.
Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is subjective. But one thing is undeniable: it's incredibly satisfying to open an airline app and realize you can buy a little extra comfort for less than the cost of a Starbucks order.
Case in point: Redditors recently took to a Delta-focused thread to celebrate what felt like a small miracle—a $16 upgrade to Comfort+. The post quickly turned into a virtual group high-five, with others chiming in about their own surprise wins.

Once the screenshot appeared, the comments turned into a leaderboard of sorts. One traveler shared, "Currently have $11.83 for LGA–PIT (both directions)," adding that they'd "seen First as low as something like $26.88." Another chimed in with, "SLC–MSP for me today was $8.73—couldn't believe it." The replies were equal parts disbelief and delight. When someone joked, "Order a double and you already got your money's worth," the original poster didn't miss a beat: "Oh trust, that sapphire gin will be mine."
Some of the biggest reactions were reserved for longer routes. "I got Comfort+ SEA to TPE for $25 last month," one user wrote, prompting another to respond simply, "The real winner." Others pointed out how inconsistent pricing has become. "Prices for Comf+ have been all over the place this year," one frequent flyer noted. "I've snagged it for as little as $30 and seen it as high as $200."
Are these pricing glitches? Or just the byproduct of dynamic pricing gone a little feral? Hard to say. But there's something undeniably fun about these micro-victories—especially when the payoff is real legroom, earlier boarding, free drinks or simply getting off the plane faster.
I've played this game myself and I must admit, it was nice. On a recent trip home from Fort Lauderdale, a Comfort+ upgrade popped up for $59. That meant enough space to work comfortably, a seat closer to the front and a faster exit at Boston Logan—translating to an earlier Uber and getting home to my dog nearly 45 minutes sooner. Worth it? Absolutely.
Does it feel like the future of flying is becoming a bit casino-like, with travelers bidding on perks that used to be standard? Maybe. But in a world where flight prices haven't risen nearly as fast as food, gas or hotel rates , paying $20 or $50 for two extra inches of legroom can still feel like a win.
