The Easy Brown Sugar Latte Taking Over TikTok (No Espresso Machine Needed)
You only need three ingredients and two minutes to make this delectable drink.
Thanks to the internet, the repertoire of coffee drinks I can easily make at home has expanded well beyond a plain cup of drip. With the ability to craft flavor-infused syrups and homemade cold foams, my mornings have become more delicious, and I’ve taken fewer expensive trips to Starbucks.
A thriving coffee culture on social media has produced hundreds of coffee-focused content creators who regularly share clips demonstrating how to make creative beverages at home. From the “ fluffy seagull latte ” to the coconut water americano , many TikTok-fueled coffee drinks have gone viral.
One of the perennially popular beverages on my feed — and one that’s been popping up even more often as the weather warms — is the sweet and simple iced brown sugar latte . Given that brown sugar was named the flavor of the year for 2025 by the T. Hasegawa Food & Beverage Trends Report, it’s no surprise that the caramel-like ingredient is featured in tons of viral coffee content.

Not every creator makes this drink the exact same way, and most renditions will have a personal touch or two. But there is one core method for whipping up a brown sugar latte that you'll see most often online. After analyzing dozens of videos on how to make it, I learned that the simplest version of this drink comes down to just three ingredients — and you don’t even need an espresso machine to make it.
How to make a brown sugar latte
This internet-inspired concoction is perfect for anyone new to making their own lattes, but even if you’re a coffee connoisseur, it’s a no-recipe recipe worth keeping in your back pocket. It calls for brown sugar (of course), your milk of choice, and instant espresso. Instant espresso sometimes gets a bad rap for tasting a little more intense and acidic than its freshly brewed counterpart, but the complex, rich notes of brown sugar balance it out.
Add one tablespoon of brown sugar and about two teaspoons (or the recommended serving size on the packaging) of instant espresso or coffee to the bottom of a glass. Pour in a generous splash of hot water — it should come roughly to 1 to 2 inches up the side of the glass — and stir until the espresso and brown sugar dissolve. If you want a small amount of foam, you can use a handheld milk frother to whisk the coffee, sugar, and water together.
This stage is also when you can add optional customizations, which you’ll often see on social media. You can add a drizzle of honey or caramel syrup, a pinch of salt, or a sprinkle of cinnamon to the instant coffee and brown sugar mixture.
After the sugar and espresso have dissolved, add ice to your glass. (If you want to make a shaken espresso instead of a regular latte, you can place a tightly sealed lid on top and shake the espresso and ice together vigorously before doing anything else.) Pour your preferred milk over the ice, and you’ve just made an iced brown sugar latte worthy of being served at Starbucks.
It goes without saying that if you have an espresso machine, you can use a real shot instead of instant coffee. Just brew the espresso directly over the brown sugar, then stir until the sweetener dissolves. But espresso machine or not, you can easily incorporate this sweet, molasses-imbued beverage into your daily routine.
