An eatery trying to save bees is opening a Worcester store
A Boston -based business whose grilled cheese sales go towards helping honey bees has chosen Worcester as the site of its first brick and mortar store.
Bees & Thank You will be opening at the Worcester Public Market this month, according to the food truck's Facebook page. The company is seeking a victualer license from the city's license commission on Thursday.
"Our first-ever brick-and-mortar is landing inside one of the most stacked food halls around," the business's Facebook page reads. "Same melty chaos, same local honey love — now with a permanent home."
Founded in Boston, the company has a food truck that operates in Worcester, according to CEO Ryan Margulis. All the grilled cheese sandwiches are made with a special ingredient — honey.
Bees & Thank You's "classic," for example, is a sandwich made with American cheese and crystalized wildflower honey, according to the company's menu.
Part of the proceeds from the sales of the grilled cheese sandwiches go towards efforts to help honey bees, including building bee sanctuaries. In 2020, the company opened their first bee sanctuary, according to their website.
"Through our various fundraising techniques, we hope to raise enough money to open up organic Bee Sanctuaries every 500 miles, across the United States," the company's website reads. "By opening these Sanctuaries, we hope to combat the need for shipping honeybees."
"Honey bees and pollinators are essential to human survival, yet most people don't understand how fragile our food system truly is," Margulis said. "The pollination and farming industries need immediate, systemic change — but that change starts with connection."
