Located in the coastal town of Corcubión, Cardenal Castle was built in 1741 to keep the local port safe from raids and plundering. The sprawling building could originally house up to 96 people, with a barracks for troops, as well as warehouses, 12 cannons, and a powder magazine. Fast-forward a couple of centuries, the Spanish government decided to sell the property in 1956. It's been privately owned since then.

Barrel-vaulted ceilings top many rooms, including the dining room.

The centuries-old spread has been tastefully renovated into a modern abode. Designed around a central courtyard, the U-shaped building offers a total of six bedrooms and three baths. Most of the original structure and period details, like the barrel-vaulted ceilings and whitewashed walls, have been left untouched to ensure plenty of old-world charm. Outside, traditional white wood shutters line the doors and windows, brightening up the stone exterior.

The castle has been made livable through the addition of a practical kitchen, a large living room, and a long dining room that could easily seat dozens. You'll also find a wine cellar with room for tastings. Exterior highlights include vegetable gardens, covered porches, and a freshwater well that was originally intended to keep troops hydrated during sieges.

A wine cellar is set up for tastings or even meals.

Along with its use as a fortress, the castle was built to honor Infante Luis of Spain, the brother of King Carlos III and the son of King Felipe V of Spain. He supplemented his royal duties by supporting artists, including Francisco Goya and Luis Paret. And while there have been many inhabitants of the building over the years, local legend says that at least one person has yet to leave: The ghost of Don Liborio, a merchant allegedly walled alive for the death of a young woman, is said to haunt the place.

Cardenal Castle is a skosh more rustic than some of the other castles recently put up for sale. The market in Ireland, for example, has featured properties that are a little more fairytale-esque. Last year, a 19th-century Irish castle was listed for $4.5 million. And just last month, an even older one long owned by the Disney family popped up with a price tag of $8.5 million. But hey, a castle is a castle.
