It's not summer without the ice cream truck. You hear an eight-bit rendition of "Pop Goes The Weasel" playing through the speakers and run outside with $5 in your hand hoping you can outrun the truck before it turns onto the next block.
But what if you didn't have to dig through your couch for change frantically chase after the ice cream truck? After all, you can order McDonald's and just about everything else to your door with just a few taps on your phone. Well, Scream Truck is actively trying to revolutionize the age-old icon of Americana.
What if DoorDash or GrubHub created an ice cream truck? You'd probably get Scream Truck, created by former Conde Nast exec Eric Murphy. Rather than driving through neighborhoods with loud music trying to lure customers like the Pied Piper, Scream Truck sends out a text blast to its subscribers letting them know that the truck will be in their area. Users can then book a stop at their house.
But unlike the ice cream truck of yesteryear, where you have to decide what you want on the fly, Scream Truck sends you a link to pre-order and pre-pay. In fact, that's the only way to order from Scream Truck. It's like ordering your coffee via the Starbucks app.
Compared to traditional ice cream truck offerings, Scream Truck's are far more premium, akin to things you'd order at an ice cream shop. They offer flavored cones, Ghirardelli sauce, and cookies and brownies from Liv Breads, a New Jersey bakery. The ice cream itself is supposedly also top notch. "This is the best soft serve you'll probably ever have," Murphy told NRN . They even make their own sprinkles.
Right now, Scream Truck is only in New Jersey, but they've recently begun franchising and will expand to Las Vegas.
