New Jersey’s 21 craziest pizzas for 2026
New Jersey is crazy about pizza. So it's no surprise that the state is home to some crazy pizzas, as well.
We're not talking about Hawaiian pizza and buffalo chicken pies, either. We mean pizzas that look like they're covered in McDonald's, pies topped with pasta, chili-blanketed pizzas and more.
Pizza purists will shriek in horror at the pies on this list, but no matter. For those willing to push the pizza envelope, our crazy pies will dazzle, delight and leave you dumfounded. Who better to compile the list than NJ.com?
For those interested in more mainstream pizzas, here's our list of N.J.'s 101 greatest pizzas.
Big Mak pizza, The Galley, Asbury ParkPeter Genovese
Big Mak pizza, The Galley Pizza & Eatery , Asbury Park
Admit it. You always wanted a McDonald's Big Mac transformed into a pizza. Well, here it is. The Big Mak mashes together a Pat LaFrieda patty, mozzarella, American cheese, minced onions, lettuce, pickles, house-made burger sauce. Pretty much everything you'd get in a regular Big Mac except for the mozzarella. The Galley made my ranking of the Jersey Shore's 44 best pizzerias and appeared in my story on the state's new pizza capital . (PG)
Swine fighter pizza, Tony Boloney'sPeter Genovese
Swine Fighter, Tony Boloney's, Atlantic City
For sheer pizza chutzpah, nothing tops the taco pizza (seen above) at Tony Boloney's, a 30-pound monstrosity with two dozen meat-stuffed tacos, a lake of guacamole and sour cream, house-made queso, regular cheese, and thick pizza crust. Eater called it the craziest pizza in America. It would be a too-obvious choice for this list, so we'll go with another of the pizzeria's wild, whacked-out creations, the Swine Fighter. Dry aged and smoked mozzarella, extra-crisp double-baked pepperoni, vodka sauce, and a "generous swirl of homemade roni-grease-ranch," whatever that is. There are other locations in Jersey City, Hoboken and Margate (PG)
Cubano Pizza, Julio's Pizza , Atlantic Highlands and Keansburg
Julio's made my list of the Jersey Shore's 44 best pizzeria largely for its pickle pizza — featuring pickle chips resting comfortably under mozzarella and a house garlic parmesan sauce. It tastes better than it might sound. The Cubano pizza takes those pickles and adds pulled pork, ham, Swiss, mozzarella and a Dijon mustard drizzle. (PG)
An Inferno pie from Zi Zia in Bloomfield, topped with fried calamari.Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Inferno, Zi Zia Pizzeria & Trattoria , Bloomfield
If you're from Jersey, you either love calamari or are too afraid to admit you don't. The crispy fried rings of squid are a quintessential Garden State appetizer. Plenty of pizzerias make a great version of the dish. How about throwing it right on top of the pizza? That's what Zi Zia does. They first toss the calamari in marinara (mild or spicy, your choice) before putting it over the pie. (JS)
Big John's Pizza, BridgetonBig John's Pizza
Double thick pizza, Big John's Pizza , Bridgeton
The double thick pizza at Big John's is unlike any other on this list: it doesn't need any crazy toppings to stand out. It's the state's guiltiest pizza pleasure, a cardiac event-inducing delight at this spare, no-nonsense neighborhood hangout. The founders were Reginald R. Scott Sr. and John Suchanoff. The latter was known as Big John. They opened the pizzeria in 1969. (PG)
Eggplant parm garlic knots crust pizza, Mimmo's Pizza, Forked River
Mimmo's boasts one of my favorite white pie lineups — try the Valentino, with great runny globs of ricotta, perky sun-dried tomatoes and just enough Kalamata olives and feta. They also have a disco fry pizza, but since we already have one on this list, we're going with the eggplant parm garlic knots crust pizza. Garlic knots on their own are irresistible, but when they're combined with an iconic Italian dish, the results are bellissimo . (PG)
Fat Cat Pizza, Gara's Pizza, Lopatcong
Fat Cat sandwiches were Rutgers grease truck legend. The trucks disappeared from the RU College Avenue campus years ago, but don't despair; the Fat Cat lives, albeit in pizza form, at Gara's. French fries, mayo, ketchup, mozzarella sticks, provolone and steak — what more do you need? Weight Watchers would definitely not approve. (PG)
Jalapeño popper pizza, Corner Slice in Maplewood.Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Jalapeño popper pizza, Corner Slice , Maplewood
Mike Bergemann's Essex County shop opened in 2025 and quickly established itself as one of the best pizzerias in the state. In fact, Corner Slice's upside down pie was crowned the No. 1 pizza in the state in our latest ranking . But while Bergemann whips up plenty of classic options like plain, margherita and pepperoni, the shop has become known for whacky specials. Cheeseburger pizza. Taylor ham Hawaiian pizza. Peking duck pizza. One of the craziest pies to date? A pizza topped with jalapeño poppers. I A mozzarella and cream cheese base is topped with roasted jalapeño and poblano rajas in crema, pickled jalapeño, brown butter toasted breadcrumbs, and garlic oil. (JS)
A penne alla vodka pie from Soho in Montclair. (Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com)
Penne alla vodka pie, Soho Pizza & Grill , Montclair
It seems like every pizza place in New Jersey (and New York) is making a vodka pie these days. How many places are putting actual penne alla vodka on the pizza, though? Soho has been making this pie long before the vodka sauce trend. It's saucy. It's heavy. It's delicious. And yes, you will need a nap after one slice. (JS)
Chicken Tenders & Fries pie from Ferazzoli's Italian Kitchen in North Arlington.Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Chicken tender and fries pie, Ferazzoli's Italian Kitchen , North Arlington and Rutherford
If a Rutgers fat sandwich was a pizza, it would look like this. Ferazzoli's takes two of everyone's favorite fried foods and throws them on a pizza. Chicken tenders and french fries? What's not to love? Dunk it in some honey mustard or ranch — normally we'd judge you for using those condiments on pizza. But when the pizza features fries and tendies? Sauce it up. (JS)
Italian hot dog pizza, The Brothers Restaurant, Red Bank
There are some semi-crazy pizzas on the menu at Brothers — the Jersey Joes (pork roll) and the Cheesesteak, with mozzarella, steak and American cheese. In a category all its own is the Italian hot dog pizza, with the usual Italian hot dog ingredients — peppers, onions, potatoes. And hot dogs. Okay, so it may not exactly be Jimmy Buff's, but it's a pizza like no other. (PG)
Spicy brown mustard is spread over pizza dough before adding cheese and sauce to make a mustard pie at Papa's Tomato Pies in Robbinsville on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. The Mustard Pie is one of the most popular items on the menu.Julian Leshay | For NJ Advance Media
Mustard pie, Papa's Tomato Pies , Robbinsville
Uninitiated pizza lovers might scoff. True New Jersey pizza aficionados are well-aware that mustard doesn't just belong on pizza, it's the base of one of the state's quintessential pies. Papa's has been open for more than 110 years years, and the Azzaro family claims it's is oldest continuously running pizzeria in the country to be owned by the same family. Adding a layer of spicy brown mustard under the sauce started as an homage to Schuster's, another Trenton tomato pie spot that closed in the 1980s. But it has become a Papa's signature. (JS)
Triple Threat + Dog Father Pizza, Joe's Rotisseria , Roselle Park
Joe's Rotisseria burst upon the scene with its often oversized pizzas and outlandish crusts. Their Triple Threat pizzas combine pizza, stromboli and garlic knots. The Triple Threat + Dog Father adds a crust made of hot dogs. I'm not sure who is more likely to be offended — pizza purists or hot dog purists. (PG)
Frito Chili Pie from The Plank Pizza Co. Beer Parlor in Saddle Brook.Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Frito Chili Pie, Plank Pizza Co. & Beer Parlor , Saddle Brook
Plank Pizza Co. is home to pizzas with countless crazy toppings. Macaroni and cheese? Carnitas? Chicken in a spicy Thai peanut sauce? You name it, they put it on a pizza. But their best pie is the Frito Chili Pie. Fritos, chili and sour cream will make you feel like you're at a southern restaurant, not a pizzeria in North Jersey. (JS)
Chicken pot pie pizza, Nunzio's Kitchen , Sayreville
Nunzio's offers several wacky pizzas, including the Wu-Tang (sweet and sour coconut shrimp), and the Taco-Flavored Kisses (ground pork and beef, jalapenos, white beans, bruschetta, olives, mozzarella, American cheese) but its most unique pizza is the chicken pot pie version, stuffed with chicken, carrots, peas and celery in a cream sauce. Call it all-American pizza comfort food. (PG)
Tuna Sushi pizza, Yutaka , Somerville
You can put anchovies and clams on a pizza, why not sushi? The tuna sushi pizza at Yutaka (you'll find it under the sushi bar appetizer menu) takes a crispy tortilla and tops it with tuna, chives and tobiko (flying fish roe). (PG)
Beet pie, Emily's Hearth, Sussex
Emily's Hearth is one of the funkiest pizzerias in the state — located inside an old diner way out in Sussex. So it's no surprise that her pizzas have personality as well. The pizzeria's pistachio pie with pistachio puree, pesto, mortadella, mozzarella and arugula came in at No. 43 on NJ.com's list of the state's best pizzas . But it's Emily's beet pie, with three different cheeses, pickles, spinach, red onion and beet pureé that makes this list. (JS)
Cheesesteak disco fries pizza, Brother Bruno's Pizza, Wayne
Jersey legend disco fries combined with cheesesteak? Be still my artery-clogged heart. Among Brother Bruno's stuffed pizzas is the cheesesteak disco fries pie, with homemade mac and cheese stuffed inside the crust and topped with sliced steak, crispy French fries, brown gravy and "loads" (their words) of cheese. I practically fainted reading all that. (PG)
Stuffed pie from The Slice Shop by BXJ in West Orange. (Christoher Burch | NJ Advance Media)Christopher Burch
Stuffed pizza, The Slice Shop by BXJ, West Orange
Bagels by Jarrett's stuffed pizza creation is otherworldly. The Sbarro-inspired creation features a traditional crust plus a thinner layer of crust over top. House-made mozzarella, vodka sauce, grilled chicken and rigatoni are stuffed in between the dough. An additional light layer of cheese tops the upper crust, providing an impressive pizza visual. BXJ's quirky pie is not just visually appealing. It perfectly balances the grilled chicken, sweet vodka sauce and creamy mozzarella to make a pleasurable experience for pizza and calzone-lovers. (CB)
The Mumbai pie from Classico Tomato Pies in West Windsor Township.Jeremy Schneider | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Mumbai pie, Classico Tomato Pies , West Windsor Township
Tomato pies are pretty old-school, but Classico isn't afraid to think outside the pizza box. The Mumbai pie is topped with cauliflower, potatoes, peas, hot cherry peppers and Indian spices, delivering an extra kick and unique texture. This spicy delight came in at 100 on NJ.com's list of the 101 best pies in the state . (JS)
Mashed potato pizza, Pompilo's Pizzeria and Restaurant , Westwood
Pompilio's is a classic Bergen County spot. They took a classic pizza crust and topped it with mashed potatoes, bacon and cheddar cheese. It tastes more like a potato skin than a pizza, but I'm not complaining. One slice of this stuff will have you down for the count. If you can finish more than two slices, you can have my job. (JS)
