I have to admit, I am not the best baker in the world. When it comes to kitchen skills, I can whip up a quick lunch or dinner meal with my eyes closed—but dessert? That’s the one thing I’d probably just buy at the store. And honestly my mom would say the same thing.
Growing up, I mostly remember making quick and easy desserts with my mom, like monkey bread or simple cupcakes from a boxed mix. And when I saw that a nostalgic dessert called ’90s Magic Cake was going viral on TikTok , I thought it looked exactly like something my mom and I would have made together. So, I decided to give the cake a try. The results were definitely magical!
What is ’90s Magic Cake?
It’s a basic dump cake recipe, meaning that you simply put all of the ingredients into a baking dish and then throw it in the oven. This one differs from the French magic cake that’s a made-from-scratch layered dessert. For the ’90s version, it’s all about boxed-mix convenience.
What you need is four things: a bag of mini marshmallows , a box of yellow cake mix , a packet of strawberry Jell-O and some frozen strawberries. First, preheat the oven to 350°F. Then prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box. After that, line your baking dish with a layer of mini marshmallows. I used a 13×9-inch baking dish, and a 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows. It was the perfect amount to cover the bottom of the dish.
Next, pour the prepared cake batter over the marshmallows. And, importantly, you do not mix it up ! This feels counterintuitive, but it’s key to achieving the “magic” of the cake. I used a rubber spatula to spread it evenly over the marshmallow layer. I sprinkled the entire Jell-O pouch over the cake batter, then I lined the top with sliced frozen strawberries. The last thing I did before putting it in the oven was pour 2/3 cup of water over the top.
I baked it for one hour. About 20 minutes into the bake, my kitchen started smelling like strawberries, and I got very excited to taste this creation!
How does the ’90s Magic Cake taste?
One word: magical. During baking, the marshmallow layer expands to the top of the cake, and the strawberries sink to the bottom. It ends up having a deliciously gooey and crunchy marshmallow top, and a layer of jammy strawberries at the bottom. It feels like an upside-down strawberry shortcake !
And it tastes absolutely incredible. I ate my first slice in disbelief that I had baked something so impressively delicious. Then I went back for seconds, obviously.

This is a very easy and impressive recipe. It came together so quickly and gave me some much-needed confidence in the baking department. And, sweetly enough, it reminded me of the easy childhood bakes I used to do with my mom in the ’90s. What could be more magical than that?
