This Is Our Most-Saved Appetizer—And It Always Gets The Party Started
"One pan did not last long."
If you’re looking for party food that’s heartier than chips and dip or bite-sized canapes, Ham Delights are our readers’ go-to recipe. Last month, it was the most saved appetizer recipe on MyRecipes , an online recipe box where you can save and organize all of your Southern Living favorites and thousands more in one place.
The Most Saved Appetizer
As the name might suggest, Ham Delights have been the hit of parties across the South for a very, very long time. This old-school recipe for gooey baked ham and cheese sandwiches (made with everyone’s favorite, King’s Hawaiian Rolls ) is as easy as can be, and can be transported and served right from the baking dish, making them the ideal dish to bring to a gathering.
What Makes Ham Delights Special?
There are many different versions of this recipe, and ours has a few twists. The bread is typically spread with a mixture of mayonnaise and mustard, but we added a little maple syrup as well, for a touch of sweetness. Gouda cheese melts really well and has a buttery, mild flavor (you can swap it out for Swiss, provolone, white Cheddar, or pepper Jack, if you prefer) that pairs nicely with the ham. And for a fancy finishing touch, we brush the tops of the assembled sandwiches with butter and sprinkle them with everything bagel seasoning, which adds an extra savory note and a nice crunch.
One Thing To Remember
When you are removing the rolls from their package, don't be tempted to separate them. You want to leave them connected so that you can slice the entire loaf horizontally with a long serrated knife, leaving you with a top and bottom layer. It's easier to assemble and bake one big sandwich than 12 small ones.
