In-N-Out has historically kept its restaurants to a relatively small number of states—but the chain could be eyeing another eastward push after years of fan requests.

In honor of the fast food burger chain's 78th anniversary, owner and president Lynsi Snyder sat down with actor Terry Crews to discuss the future of the business. (Why Terry Crews, you ask? I honestly couldn't tell you.)

During the conversation, Snyder discussed how the business has evolved since adding a regional headquarters in Tennessee . The new outpost, along with a warehouse location in Texas, gives In-N-Out the logistical ability to branch out to other states.

Snyder revealed that the chain has "earmarked" a few regions for future growth, including Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. None of those states have confirmed locations or opening dates just yet, but they're officially on In-N-Out's radar.

New Mexico is the only state with confirmed In-N-Out openings, with three locations in the works in Albuquerque. "New Mexico has been waiting for us, and that will be soon," Snyder added.

If you're hoping for an East Coast debut, though, you shouldn't hold your breath. "My goal isn't to be, oh, let's have 500 stores by this time and let's open across the whole East Coast," she said. "And though I think there's a lot of states that really want us there, it's not really in the works and not planned."

The slow growth can be attributed to both external factors and an intentional brand strategy. In-N-Out has encountered permitting issues in new states that have extended building timelines, but Snyder doesn't necessarily see it as a bad thing.

"We want to be the same no matter what state we're in," she said. "If I ever felt like we were slipping or losing our way, growth would look a lot differently."

Snyder also acknowledged that the scarcity is part of the chain's charm . "I feel like there's a special piece knowing that In-N-Out isn't everywhere," she said. And even with more states potentially joining the lineup, it sounds like In-N-Out intends to keep it that way.
