In-N-Out Burger’s menu may seem deceptively simple with just five items, but devoted fans—and even foodies who aren’t lucky enough to live on the West Coast—have probably heard of the chain’s not-so-secret menu hacks . While a cheeseburger , hamburger, and Double-Double are mainstays alongside milkshakes and french fries, terms like "Animal Style," "4x4," and " Flying Dutchman " have become ubiquitous as fan- and employee-created orders grow in popularity.

Every burger at In-N-Out is easily customizable, though you have to know where to start. There’s obviously cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions—which you can get grilled, raw, or both ways—but there’s also additional add-ons , like pickles, chopped chilies, or peppers.

Beyond toppings, you can order patties mustard-fried, salt-less, or even omit the meat entirely and order a patty-less " Veggie Burger ." While Animal Style burgers may be the tried-and-true secret menu item, it turns out that there’s a bigger beast awaiting In-N-Out fans: Gorilla Style.

Here's everything you need to know about the new fan-created burger, and how to order it for yourself.

How To Order a 'Gorilla Style' Burger at In-N-Out

"Gorilla Style" at In-N-Out may not be an official secret menu item, but the hack combines two items off the lesser-known menu with a staple to create a burger that puts Animal Style to shame.

Rather than the secret menu signature, which involves mustard-grilled patties , extra signature spread, grilled onions, and pickles, "Gorilla Style" adds extra cheese, extra meat, and fries to the burger itself to create one massive, loaded, and delightfully messy sandwich.

Because the order isn’t officially recognized by staff, customers need to order the three components separately and assemble the burger themselves—which is where In-N-Out’s signature cardboard box and lap mats come in handy.

Start by ordering a hamburger with grilled onions, then order a Flying Dutchman—another secret menu item that’s just two beef patties and two slices of cheese with no bun or lettuce. Next, you’re going to add an order of the infamous Animal Fries , which are covered in melty American cheese, a helping of In-N-Out’s signature spread, and chopped grilled onions.

Once you have the three components, it’s time to assemble the Gorilla Style burger. Open the Double-Double and set the top bun aside, then place the Flying Dutchman in the middle. Last but not least, top the burger with a generous handful of Animal Fries before putting the top bun back on. Alternatively, one In-N-Out customer on Instagram recommended "a 3x3 with whole grilled onions and add the animal style fries," if you want to simplify the process.

Fans agree that the effort is worth the reward, with one fan dubbing the hack "fricken genius." Meanwhile, another fan wrote that In-N-Out "needs to bring this to the menu ASAP.”

While it’s unlikely that In-N-Out will ever officially add "Gorilla Style" to the menu, at least you know you can order it for yourself—and exactly how to. We’ll never say never, but for now, the officially-sanctioned Double-Double Animal Style may have to suffice.
