Pro Football Hall-of-Famer and former Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis spoke at North Carolina Central's Spring Commencement on Saturday and brought the life knowledge that powered his career in the NFL. He first employed the Eagle graduates that commencement was just the beginning of their story.
"I know y'all sitting there like, 'I made it.' … But now, let me tell you the truth. This is not the finish line. This is the doorway. See, I know what it feels like to stand at the edge of your future and not know exactly what's coming next."
He then urged the graduates to find focus in a world where there are several things competing for their attention.
"Train your mind before the world touches it. … Stop grabbing your phone and pick up a Bible every morning and you'll find more blessing. … For me to be happy, I got to get up and somebody got to like my post on social media. Child, I don't care what you like. I'm in my purpose, I'm stuck in my purpose."
Lewis used his life story before fame and football to highlight how the graduates can write their own story, no matter what they've been through.
I walked in [to college] with $20 worth of food stamps," Lewis recalled. "But what I did have was structure. And I had God… I had to make a decision, not about what I wanted to do, but about who I was going to be."
