  • NBA player Steven Adams invested in a large farm in New Zealand, which includes dairy cows, kiwi fruit, and avocado operations.

Some NBA players invest in real estate, others invest in businesses, while some even engage in cryptocurrency. Steven Adams? The Kiwi bet big on a huge farm on a coastal island in his home country.

During his recent appearance on "The Young Man and the Three" podcast, Adams shared some information about his personal paradise in the "Land of the long white cloud."

"We have about roughly 500 dairy cows, so it's a dairy operation. And then the other operation in there is kiwi fruit and avocado. It's in the North Island of New Zealand. It's kind of right on the coast, real beautiful piece of land. It's nice on the beach, whatnot. Like it's pretty,"  said  Adams.

A land of fertile soil and abundant resources

Adams did not specifically say where his farm was located, but in a previous interview, he mentioned that it was in the Bay of Plenty, a large concave bend that stretches 160 miles along the Northern coast of New Zealand.

Known for its fertile land, the island is one of the major kiwi fruit-growing places in the world. With a subtropical climate and year-round access to pasture, it's also an ideal location for dairy farming, which is the obvious reason for Steven's choice of business.

The Houston Rockets' big man said he has a farm manager who oversees the entire operation of the area. He employs three people to care for the cows and manage the dairy operations, while one of his brothers oversees the orchard and reports to him, providing updates while he's in the U.S. for the NBA season.

"We play XBox together sometimes, and like that's how he will give me the updates…while we're gaming, he'll get me some like farm updates, and give me the whole spiel,"  added Adams.

Steven's safe haven during the pandemic

It's unknown when exactly Adams acquired the property. However, during a 2021 interview, he stated that it was newly purchased when COVID-19 struck in 2020. And because of the health scare that it presented, he flew back to New Zealand and sought sanctuary on his farm. It became his happy place and helped keep him going during those uncertain times.

"There was so much uncertainty about the future," explained  Adams.  "No one knew what was going on … the farm was a saviour sort of thing. The routine doesn't change. Everyone else's routine was affected when it shut down; the cows don't care, mate, they still need to get looked after. So, going out on the farm, I just adopted that routine, and it felt somewhat normal with all the other stuff going on. It's less scary now, the whole Covid thing, but at that point, no one knew anything, and it was just nice to get that kind of peaceful whatever."

Five years later, Adams now plays for the Rockets. He is now 32 years old and a 12-year veteran in the NBA. Steven is still going strong, and the end still looks far away for his career. But when that time comes, it's not hard to think where he'll settle down for the rest of his life.
