"Scarecrows in the Meadow": Litchfield Historical Society, 7 South St., will host its scarecrow decorating contest and all are welcome to participate.
Registration is now open to enter the seventh annual "Scarecrows in the Meadow" event taking place Oct. 17 to Nov. 1 at the Tapping Reeve Meadow, 82 South St., Litchfield.
The area will be filled with more than 50 scarecrows made from straw, hay, leaves, wood chips, buttons and more, and draped in clothes, wigs and hats.
The scarecrows will be available for viewing every day from dawn to dusk and visitors can vote on their favorite ones.
Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Due to limited spots, registration is required for the scarecrow decorating contest.

Town Plot Neighborhood Association: The Town Plot Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Hall, 785 Highland Ave., Waterbury.
A community officer will give an update on activity within the neighborhood. Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo will be the featured speaker.
All association members are urged to attend and are expected to pay their dues at that time.
Canned goods will be collected to stock the pantry at the church.

Hopeville Neighborhood Association: The Hopeville Neighborhood Association will meet Wednesday at 6:30 p.m at Hopeville Church, 160 Piedmont St., Waterbury.
The guest speaker will be Jim Konrad of Ion Solar.
Refreshments will be served.
Afternoon book discussion: Harwinton Public Library, 80 Bentley Drive, will host its afternoon book discussion Thursday at 2 p.m.
The discussion will be on the book "Atmosphere" by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Books are available to borrow.

Genre fiction book club: Scoville Library, 38 Main St., Salisbury, will be hosting its genre fiction book club meeting Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The new book club features reading and discussions of fantasy, romance, mystery, thrillers and sci-fi.
This month's book is "The Spellshop" by Sarah Beth Durst.
Copies of the book are available for loan at the library.
There will be snacks, conversation and book recommendations.

Contra dance lessons: Falls Village Contra Dance School will host an open dance lesson series at Center on Main, 103 Main St., Falls Village, on Sept. 12, Oct. 10 and Nov. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.
All are welcome with a partner to the three-session beginner series.
The classes feature music by the Falls Village Fiddler.
The cost is $15 to 20 on a sliding scale per class.
Online registration is recommended but walk-ins are welcome.
