Foxes are beautiful creatures that are part of the  Canidae  (Canine) family, which includes jackals, wolves and coyotes. They are not very common to see, which means if you're lucky enough to spot one, it's a fairly unique experience. There may be even more to it, however, which is where a  fox's spiritual meaning and symbolismcome in.

From the difference in sighting a red fox vs. a gray fox to seeing foxes in your dreams, if it's good luck to have a fox cross your path and more,  animal communicator and evidential medium Nancy Mello shares what a fox sighting means spiritually and whether or not it's a good omen.

Characteristics and Traits of a Fox

Foxes have petite, acute snouts and nimble bodies atop long, thin legs. Their bushy tail is another notable characteristic of these social animals that are found all over the world. They live across North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa, which gives way to a wide range of terrain and varied diets .

Foxes are small in size , averaging between 1.5-24 lbs., and can be up to 24 inches tall. That is roughly the size of a smaller dog.

You can find foxes living in forested areas mostly, but they can also venture into mountains , grasslands and deserts to find homes and food. Burrows, also called dens, provide foxes with comfortable, climate-controlled living spaces for them to raise their "pups" in. They are social, often having a breeding couple among the group, while the other non-breeders help to raise them.

Many animals can appear to you and hold great symbolism, like Blue Jays or Owls . Foxes are no exception, either. They may be small, but they are mighty. Cunning, fearless protectors, Mello believes they are "leaders," too.

"When my clients see foxes, it’s them, 'leading the way,'" Mello explains. "It means to trust the direction you are going, and don't hesitate in your decision making."

Life may be hectic, with goals getting placed on the back burner ,leaving you feeling a bit stuck. But if a fox appears in your life, it knows you are working towards something.

What Does the Fox Symbolize Spiritually?

"The fox represents the confidence deep down inside of you, even if you’ve never felt that kind of confidence before," Mello says about a fox sighting.

Look inward to your own self, and be like foxes, who, according to Mello, "aren't afraid to take on challenges." If a fox springs into your life, take it as an indication that it is time to find your drive.

Is It a Good or Bad Omen To See a Fox?

Foxes are sly, mischievous creatures—ones that do not intentionally fraternize with humans. So, spotting one in the wild is rare, as well as lucky. "There is a reason [for seeing one]," Mello says. "It's almost as if when you see a fox, the Universe is saying, 'Pay attention!'”

"A fox symbolizes our deep intelligence and understanding of the world around us," Mello tells Parade . "It is the deep-seated understanding that will come out if put to the test or challenged."

If you spot a fox, it's a reminder that you are ready for any challenge. As Mello explains, "A fox can symbolize that self-assuredness that we all are capable of."

What Does a Fox Crossing Your Path Mean?

Walking along through life, minding your own business, when a fox crosses your path? You may have another thing coming.

According to Mello, the appearance of a fox brings a two-fold message. "It is a challenge to be mindful and present to your current circumstances, but also trust that you can handle whatever crosses your path," she says. "Trust your own instincts and intuition."

A surprise fox crossing would likely be both an awakening and a blessing in your life.

What Does It Mean if You See a Fox After Someone Dies?

When someone passes, such as a spouse, there is always grief to follow. But seeing a fox after someone dies should be comforting to you. Mello's insight into this is "that their soul has moved on."

Her own clients have reported to her that after an important figure in their life has passed, they have seen a fox.

One of the most common colors of fox is red. The spiritual meaning of a red fox is that they "encourage us to be more flexible and adaptable to our current situations," explains Mello. "They demand movement and swiftness in decision making and allow for little hesitation."

Mello adds that if a red fox continues to pop up in your life, you should consider "[letting] go of the control you think you feel, and instead trust your instincts and move forward."

What Is the Spiritual Meaning of a Gray Fox?

Another color on the fox spectrum is gray. The spiritual meaning behind seeing a grey fox is far different than when seeing a red one.

Mello's take on the spiritual meaning of a gray fox is that it "represent[s] our need for isolation and oneness." She adds, "They are the introverted part of ourselves that doesn't want the noise of not only other people, but other distractions."

When seeing a red fox, you should plow forward and trust your instincts, while a gray fox sighting may indicate a need for slowing down, as Mello explains, "It can also be seen as our soul craving to reconnect with itself."

What Does It Mean if You See a Fox in Your Dreams?

A fox in your dreams is wonderful karma . If you wake up from dreaming about foxes, Mello suggests that you try remembering the direction the fox was traveling.

Foxes are leading your subconscious in a direction and want you to have confidence in your intuition of what needs to be done. "It is your soul letting you know that you will be okay as long as you are trusting," Mello shares.

It could very well be that the fox is leading you in the right direction—either towards or away from something important.
