I Tried Walmart's King Krumb vs. Crumbl Cookies To See Which Is Best

If you know me, you know that I love a dupe. When I do my grocery shopping, whether it be at Aldi or Kroger , I'm always on the lookout for the store-brand options of my favorite groceries. They're always more affordable and often just as good as the name-brand (or sometimes better).

My copycat-loving ways also extend to recipes. For Parade , I've created my own versions of Cracker Barrel Mac and Cheese, Texas Roadhouse Butter , Panera's Broccoli Cheddar Soup and many more. These recipes are a fun challenge and are a great (and budget-friendly) way to bring a restaurant experience home.

So when I discovered the new-to-me King Krumb cookies in the Walmart bakery , I was instantly intrigued. As a self-proclaimed Crumbl superfan, I knew exactly what they were going for with those huge soft cookies with the cheeky name.

As the doyenne of dupes, I knew that a head-to-head taste test was in order. Would the Walmart version beat my one-and-only Crumbl or would the iconic treat in the pink box keep the crown? There was only one way to find out. Here's what happened during King Krumb vs. Crumblcookies, AKA the giant cookie rumble.

What Are Crumbl Cookies?

I will admit, until Crumbl opened its first store in my city a few years ago, I had never heard of them, but by the time they opened a second location closer to my house, I was already a big fan!

Founded in 2017 by two cousins, Crumbl is a bakery chain that began with the goal of perfecting the chocolate chip cookie . Today, it's one of the fastest-growing bakery chains in the country.

Crumbl is known for a few things: its open kitchen concept, which allows customers to see their cookies being made; the large cookies with a soft, slightly underbaked texture; and a rotating menu of unique, delicious flavors that change every week. The most popular flavors include Milk Chocolate Chip, Classic Pink Sugar and Cookie Dough. The brand is also known for its limited-time flavors, which sometimes include collabs with celebrities like Benson Boone and the Kardashians .

What Is Walmart's King Krumb?

King Krumb is "new" to me, even though I'm a weekly Walmart shopper. I didn't discover these king-sized, soft-baked Crumbl-esque cookies until a recent visit to the Walmart bakery. The jumbo cookies come in a two-pack and are currently available in three flavors: Decadent Chocolate Chunk, Triple Chocolate Fudge and Confetti Birthday Cake.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys a social media rabbit hole, look up " King Krumb " on TikTok to see cookie fans sharing their thoughts and feelings about this sweet copycat.

Walmart's King Krumb vs. Crumbl Cookies Taste Test

What a hard job it was to put these delicious confections head-to-head, but I'm here for it! For this face off, I compared the two treats based on size, flavor/texture, packaging and price/value. Let's dig in!

Crumbl vs. King Krumb: Size

Because Crumbl is known for its large cookies, approximately five inches in diameter to be exact, King Krumb had some big cookie shoes to fill. At first glance, these cookies seem to be the same size, but in a more detailed side-by-side comparison, King Krumb is a tad larger! However, the Crumbl cookie had a little more height to it. A larger cookie means more to share, and if a brand is going to go up against an iconic brand, go big or go home!

Crumbl vs. King Krumb: Flavor and Texture

Crumbl cookies are known for their slightly underbaked texture and extra buttery flavor, and as soon as you bite into one, you can see (and taste) it! While some might not find this faint gooey consistency appealing, for those of us who are Crumbl superfans, this slightly underbaked texture is one of the biggest draws. The chocolate chip cookie has large pieces of chocolate that are soft and almost melt in your mouth, giving the illusion of being warm from the oven, even the next day.

Unfortunately, King Krumb must have missed the memo, because theirs was definitely baked through, had no extra butter flavor and the chocolate pieces were harder, giving the cookie a crunch factor. All of these led to a completely different cookie experience.

For this side-by-side comparison, I focused on the chocolate chip flavor because each brand had a version. That said, I did taste all of the cookies to determine the overall yum factor.

For someone like me who sees extra icing as a bonus, the Crumbl Birthday Cake and Classic Pink Sugar cookies outscored all of the King Krumb cookies, which have no frosting at all. When you take an extra soft, buttery cookie and top it with buttercream, I will choose it every time.

Crumbl vs. King Krumb: Packaging

I can spot the signature pink Crumbl box from a mile away. A single cookie will come in a small box by itself, and orders of two, four or six cookies are packed in larger boxes. While the folks at Crumbl take presentation very seriously, the downside is that sometimes the cookies can slide around on the drive home. And as much as I like the charming bakery-style box, it's not an air-tight container, so any leftover cookies need to be stashed in something else if you don't want them to get stale.

I really appreciate the attention to packaging King Krumb takes to ensure freshness. The best-by sticker on top, in plain view, makes it easy to see when the cookies were baked. The box itself has two parts: an outer cardboard box plus the inner plastic part that not only latches shut, but has individual wells for each cookie, so they don't slide into one another. The two-part package also helps keep the cookies fresh, with no need for transferring.

Crumbl could learn a little something and maybe make some upgrades to those pink boxes.

Crumbl vs. King Krumb: Price and Overall Value

I'm a bargain-loving girl, so King Krumb's price—two huge cookies for $5.97—definitely speaks to my wallet. The price of Crumbl cookies varies by location, but you can expect to pay between $4 and $5 per cookie, depending on the flavor. You can bring the per-cookie cost down if you buy multiples. I took advantage of a weekly special and got six Crumbl cookies for the price of four, paying about $16 total.

I appreciate that King Krumb found a way to bring the price down on a fun treat, but I also know you get what you pay for, so for me, paying a little more for the real-deal Crumbl is completely worth it. That said, if your budget is really tight, King Krumb might be the way to go. When trying to decide on the winner of this sub-contest, it really depends on your budget.

While I'm happy to see Walmart upping its cookie game, and trying to bring a premium, Crumbl-like experience to more folks, I'm a flavor girl first, and nothing can top Crumbl's texture, unique flavor combos, creative toppings and overall taste. In this contest, the original definitely reigned supreme!
