A New England Colonial Is the Centerpiece of This $35 Million Private Island in Connecticut

  • Hay Island, a private island off the coast of Darien, Connecticut, is on the market for $35 million, featuring an 8,684-square-foot New England colonial main home and various amenities ideal for a seaside getaway.

When you envision island living, you may think of palm trees and white-sand beaches. But you won't find those tropical elements at a private island recently in Connecticut, but you'll get a whole lot else.

Spread over more than 18 acres, Hay Island just off the coast of Darien is asking $35 million. The land has been in the Ziegler family for more than a century, and it's the last part of their Connecticut property to hit the market. Leslie McElwreath at Sotheby's International Realty–Greenwich Brokerage holds the listing . A few years ago, the Zieglers—who made their money in the baking-powder industry—made headlines when they listed an even more impressive 60-acre island in Connecticut for $100 million, down from the original asking price of $175 million.

The up-to-date kitchen leads to a breakfast room with a fireplace.

While Hay Island encompasses a substantially smaller amount of land, it comfortably accommodates a range of features ideal for a seaside getaway. The centerpiece is an 8,684-square-foot New England colonial main home built in 2010 and designed by the architect Austin Patterson Disston . Six bedrooms and seven bathrooms span the property's three floors. On the first floor, the paneled library includes a wet bar and one of six fireplaces. Up on the top floor, an office inspired by a ship captain's quarters is framed by bay windows that look out over the Long Island Sound.

The property takes full advantage of those views both inside and out. Along the back of the colonial, there's a waterside veranda that you can also access through the library. The family room, meanwhile, opens to a screened-in porch, and a stone terrace off of the breakfast room features an outdoor fireplace, plus a built-in barbecue and a spa. Balconies offer a breath of fresh air on both the second and third floors.

The infinity pool has the effect of leading into the sound.

Nearby, friends or family can post up in the full-service guest house, which includes two en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen, an office, and a family room. Plus, you can all enjoy the various water-based activities on the property—this is an island, after all. Two different beaches lend themselves to swimming, fishing, or kayaking in the sound. If you're not a fan of the open water, an infinity pool sits along the beachfront. Landlubbers would do well to stroll the island's various pathways, which take you past well-manicured lawns and even a freshwater pond.
