MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Cold weather continues to move through the Gulf Coast, which might mean a long road ahead for helping your plants avoid the winter blues.

Jennifer Fischer with Stokley Garden Express in Mobile told News 5 that paying a little more attention to your greenery this season can go a long way, for both indoor and outdoor plants.

Any hanging baskets or plants that are sensitive to the weather should be brought in or covered when temperatures get close to freezing, according to Fischer. Otherwise, the plants' buds could freeze off.

"If it's tropical, I'll definitely pay attention to those," said Fischer. "And, you know, for the most part, things that are cold hardy and, in the ground, as long as the ground protected with mulch or what have you."

A common mistake that plant owners make during the winter season, is not watering their ferns properly.

Fischer said the water helps keep the plant healthy and protects their roots from freezing out in the cold.

"Not covering them, not watering them, or covering them with plastic, you know, because that's really bad for them," Fischer said in regard to other common mistakes owners make with outdoor plants.
