The Shocking Secret Ingredient for The Best-Ever Carrot Cake
  • Adding carrot baby food to carrot cake recipes can enhance flavor, moisture, and consistency, making it a simple and inexpensive way to improve the dessert.

When I try new recipes , I'm always taking a gamble on whether it will come out tasting and looking good. Desserts are even trickier because they can be finicky. Carrot cake is one of those homemade desserts that can be a hit-or-miss, depending on the wet-to-dry ratio. If you're looking for a way to make your carrot cake ten times better, there's a surprising secret:  carrot baby food.

Yes, you read that correct! Puréed baby carrot food can make your carrot cake even better. I love this cake mix hack because it's simple and easy to incorporate and baby food is easy to find. The jarred and pouch varieties are both useful for adding additional moisture and to boost flavor. Keep in mind that since baby food consistency can vary, you'll likely need to adjust the ingredients to account for this secret ingredient.

Why Add Baby Food into Carrot Cake

Carrot-flavored baby food works in  carrot cake recipes because the flavors are already part of the traditional recipe. The baby food can be used as a full substitute for shredded carrots or as an enhancement. Sometimes shredded or grated carrots can make the batter lumpy, which makes for an unappetizing finished bite.

By using carrot baby food, you get the smooth consistency and sweetness that you normally get from raw carrots. Plus, it adds moisture to  carrot cakes . What I love the most is the decreased prep time from grating carrots (as opposed to buying shredded carrots).

How to Add Baby Food into Carrot Cake

Start with your favorite  carrot cake recipe . Decide if you want to use the baby food as a complete swap or replacement for some of the shredded carrots. If you want a smoother texture, use an entire 4-ounce jar to replace roughly 1 to 1 ½ cups of carrots.

Since baby food has more liquid, you'll want to reduce the amount of vegetable oil in your recipe. For instance, if you normally use 3/4 cup of oil, reduce the amount to 1/2 cup. Ideally, you'll want to reduce the oil by a couple of tablespoons. Ultimately, you'll want to maintain the right consistency, so you may have to experiment with the wet and dry ratio until it's to your liking.
