The Southern Way to Make Coffee 10x Better
  • Southern coffee punch is a chilled, creamy coffee drink made with strong brewed coffee, vanilla or coffee ice cream, sweetened condensed milk, and chocolate syrup, often served with a frozen coffee-and-cream ring in the center.

Growing up in the South, I learned that there are two things you can always count on at a gathering: plenty of food and even more sweet tea . But if the occasion is extra special—think bridal showers , baby showers or a church potluck—you might just be lucky enough to spot a Southern coffee punchsitting proudly on the refreshment table.

This isn't just any  coffee drink—it's a creamy, frosty, dessert-like punch that combines coffee , ice cream and other sweet ingredients (think chocolate syrup) into a treat that's impossible to resist. If you've never had it before, you're in for a serious  treat .

A great coffee punch recipe was shared on Southern Living 's Instagram page ( @southernlivingmag ) and it looks so good it's making me miss home!

What is Southern Coffee Punch?

A Southern coffee punch is basically an iced coffee lover's dream but with an indulgent twist. It's a chilled, creamy coffee that's often served in a large punch bowl with a frozen coffee-and-cream ring floating in the center. The frozen ring not only looks great, but it also keeps the punch nice and cold without watering it down.

At its core, this punch is made with strong brewed coffee, a generous scoop (or many more) of vanilla or coffee ice cream (often both), sweetened condensed milk or cream for richness and chocolate syrup.

These ingredients come together to create a coffee punch that's part dessert and part drink. Some people also add a splash of liqueur—Kahlúa or Baileys—for an adults-only version.

How to Make Southern Coffee Punch

One of the best things about this punch is how easy it is to make. It feels fancy, but it's mostly just mixing up ingredients and letting the magic happen.

To make the signature frozen coffee ring, mix cooled coffee with cream or sweetened condensed milk, then pour it into a bundt pan or ring mold. Freeze until solid (overnight is best). This will float in the punch bowl and slowly melt, keeping your coffee punch cold and creamy.

Before serving, drizzle the inside of a large punch bowl with chocolate syrup and then combine chilled coffee with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Pour in some sweetened condensed milk (or half-and-half) for even more richness. Stir gently as the ice cream starts to melt, creating a luscious, frothy texture.

Carefully remove the frozen coffee ring from its mold (run warm water around the edges if needed) and place it in the punch bowl. Ladle the punch into cups or glasses, and for an extra festive touch, top each serving with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and/or a drizzle of caramel.

Southern coffee punch is more than just a drink. It's the kind of thing that shows up at celebrations and reminds people of past gatherings and those we love. It's creamy and just sweet enough to feel like a treat while still giving you a good dose of coffee flavor.
