Trump officials not pleased by report that Amazon will display tariff costs next to prices
Amazon denied reports circulating Monday that, alongside the sticker price of items sold on its online store, shoppers may soon see a new number: the cost added to their purchase by tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
Punchbowl News , a Washington, D.C., based political news outlet, reported Monday that the online retail giant will begin displaying how much the president's tariffs add to an item's total price, to the irritation of the White House.
"I just got off the phone with the president about Amazon's announcement. This is a hostile and political act by Amazon," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday morning, according to Punchbowl.
Amazon, however, denied the report.
"The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products," a company spokesperson said. "This was never approved and is not going to happen."
Tariffs, a tax on foreign imports, will likely spur higher prices on those products, the Federal Reserve has warned.
Trump imposed the tariffs on numerous countries, following through on a campaign pledge to impose them across the board on most foreign-made goods. He has adjusted some of the levies and exempted some products, but has left in place tariffs as high as 145% on China, one of the leading manufacturers of products bought in America.
