3 inmates die within a month at Massachusetts’ largest medium-security prison
Three incarcerated men at the state's largest medium-security prison have died in the past month, officials confirmed Thursday.
The deaths happened on Sept. 20, Sept. 27 and Oct. 20, the state's Department of Correction confirmed. There are no signs of foul play, but the cause and manner of each person's death remains under investigation, a spokesperson said.
"Our staff responded immediately in each instance and worked alongside emergency responders to provide life-saving measures," the spokesperson said. "The DOC remains deeply committed to ensuring incarcerated individuals have access to comprehensive mental health and substance use services."
The Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Norfolk is the state's largest medium-security prison and houses men serving criminal sentences.
The department described each death as a "medical emergency." In each instance, staff at the prison attempted life-saving efforts on the man before they were taken to a hospital by the Norfolk Fire Department. All three men were pronounced dead at hospitals.
Their deaths are under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney's office.
"Cause and manners of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and it is premature to speculate at this time," the spokesperson said.
