Up to 8 inches of snow may be dumped over parts of Massachusetts on Friday night as a heavy winter storm blankets the northeast.
A winter storm warning was in effect for the Berkshires from 4 p.m. on Friday until 1 p.m. on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents may see between 5 and 8 inches of snow, with moderate to heavy snowfall developing early Friday evening and continuing overnight.
A winter weather advisory was also issued for Hampden County from 7 p.m. Friday night until 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Accumulations could total between 4 and 6 inches in the region, with up to 7 inches in areas like Pittsfield, according to the National Weather Service.
Springfield could see between 3 and 5 inches, while Worcester may only see between 1 and 3. Less than an inch is expected for Boston and Cape Cod & the Islands, forecasters said.
Snowfall rates may reach up to 2 or 3 inches per hour during the peak of the storm through midnight, until most snow bands move out of state before 5 a.m. on Saturday. A few scattered showers or flurries could linger until 7 a.m. in Eastern Massachusetts, forecasters said.
Forecasters are eyeing a second storm system that could bring a wintry mix to Massachusetts on Sunday night.
Freezing rain is possible, though forecasters expect more rain than snow for most areas. Ice accumulations should be under one-tenth of an inch.
