American Airlines Is ‘Finally’ Offering a Major Perk Customers Say Is Long ‘Overdue’
  • American Airlines is now offering free Wi-Fi to AAdvantage members on select flights, with plans to expand the service to nearly all flights this spring.

Long gone are the days of paying for Wi-Fi on American Airlines flights–at least for some passengers.

The airline rolled out a major new perk for AAdavantage members beginning January 6, offering free Wi-Fi on its narrowbody planes and two-class regional jets before a larger rollout on nearly all of its flights later this spring, says American Airlines.

To access the free Wi-Fi, travelers will need to log in using their AAdvantage number and password to the aainflight.com portal, then select "Free Wi-Fi" to start browsing. Joining AAdvantage is free, and is how customers can earn miles towards things like priority boarding, upgrades, and awards travel.

"As American celebrates 100 years of delivering industry firsts, including the first loyalty program and first airport lounge, we're setting the standard for connectivity in the skies," said Heather Garboden, American's Chief Customer Officer, in a statement. "Free high-speed Wi-Fi isn't just a perk — it's essential for today's travelers. That's why we're proud to begin rolling out this new offering, sponsored by AT&T, across the majority of our fleet. Once roll out is completed, every AAdvantage® member can stay connected, stream and share almost anywhere their journey takes them for free."

Though fans seemed enthusiastic about the news on American's official Instagram announcement, writing "this is the BEST news!" and commenting with celebratory clapping and party emojis , the sentiment was not shared across all social media. When Flight Drama , an aviation news Instagram page, shared the update, comments were quickly flooded with those who felt the airline should have done this earlier.

"Finally! Because paying $25 a flight was ridiculous," said a commenter, with more writing, "About Damn time," and stating that the update was "So overdue." Others voiced concern about getting refunds if they had already prepaid for Wi-Fi. "pay monthly for the service as it is cheaper than per flight. I wonder if they'll send me any communication letting me know I don't have to pay any more," asked one person.
