Fresh off Massachusetts' most impactful snowstorm in years, forecasters are eying another significant storm that could arrive this coming weekend.

However, still days out from the storm's possible arrival, authorities cautioned that the direction, strength and timing of the weather system remain uncertain.

"Potential is increasing for another significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend," the National Weather Service wrote on X Monday afternoon. "It is too early to know the details, but please keep updated with the latest forecasts this week!"

The agency's Weather Prediction Center said the storm could impact a broad swath of the Eastern Seaboard sometime between Friday night and Monday night.

Cold temperatures will continue to blanket the Eastern United States into next week, the weather service said. The agency forecasts the combination of cold air with a low-pressure system developing late in the week to cause "widespread heavy precipitation."

The timing, track and strength of the low-pressure system are still unclear. They will determine whether the storm arrives as rain, snow or a wintry mix, and how much precipitation occurs onshore.

Possibilities "range from a significant storm to a system that passes well to the southeast ... with minimal impacts," meteorologists at the weather service's regional office in Norton said Monday afternoon. "There are many moving parts with this setup... To put it plainly, the exact track and strength of any system is highly uncertain at this point."

"No one wants to hear it, but there's a nor'easter roaming offshore this coming weekend," NBC Boston meteorologist Pete Bouchard wrote Monday on X . "Coastal flooding, high winds, and....precipitation."

"It's too early to cheer, panic, or change any plans," the Capital Weather Gang, the weather blog of The Washington Post, said Monday on X.
