‘Bad, bad, bad!’ Democratic Party as popular as Cracker Barrel redesign, pollster says

One of the two major American political parties is about as unpopular now as the recent controversial redesign of a popular American restaurant chain.

"The Democratic Party brand right now has the appeal with the American voter as the Cracker Barrel rebrand has with the American consumers," CNN analyst Harry Enten said on Tuesday. "Bad, bad, bad! What are you doing? Oh my goodness gracious."

Enten explained this growing disconnect between the party and voters with the example of voter registration tracking conducted by four swing states: Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

"Look, the Republican Party is in [its] best position at this point in the cycle since at least 2005," Enten said.

Gains among Republicans have fluctuated at various times over the past 20 or more years, but they continued to change in favor of Republicans during President Donald Trump's first term.

Between 2017 and 2021, the GOP saw a 3% growth in party registration, Enten said. Republicans in Nevada saw a 6% increase and both North Carolina and Pennsylvania saw 8-point gains.

"[Republicans] are converting old former Democrats to their side of the ledger, as well as picking up new voters, registering new voters," Enten said. "And it absolutely paid off in the 2024 election."

But when it came to whether Democrats have made their own gains in those same three swing states since Trump's return to the White House, Enten answered, "Uh uh."

"We'll see what happens down the road," he concluded before he reiterated the Cracker Barrel analogy.

Why Cracker Barrel?

On Monday, Aug. 18, Cracker Barrel revealed its new logo for a fifth time in its history. Cracker Barrel stated that the design is a return to its original 1969 logo and is "rooted even more closely to the iconic barrel-shaped and word mark that started it all."

But people online slammed the redesign, with Donald Trump Jr. asking on X , "WTF is wrong with @CrackerBarrel??!"

Many social media users were quick to compare the logo complaints to the 2023 Bud Light controversy , where a boycott was launched by critics angered by the brewer's partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

"Cracker Barrel should go back to the old logo, admit a mistake based on customer response (the ultimate Poll), and manage the company better than ever before," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. "They got a Billion Dollars worth of free publicity if they play their cards right. Very tricky to do, but a great opportunity."

Hours later, the chain stated on Facebook that the "new logo is going away and our 'Old Timer' will remain." The new logo originally removed the "Old Timer" seated beside a barrel and

"We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel," the company's Facebook post. "We said we would listen, and we have."

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X a screenshot of Trump's Truth Social post after Cracker Barrel reverted to its old logo. She captioned the screenshot with, "Eight hours later," followed by the smiling emoji with sunglasses, seemingly a sign of taking credit for changing the logo back.
