Big Y reopens in Tower Square after re-do
SPRINGFIELD — Big Y Foods has reopened its Big Y Express Fresh Market in Tower Square following a two-week shutdown and reconfiguration.
“This update was driven directly by customer feedback, with shoppers expressing a desire for more grab-and-go and convenience-focused options,” Springfield-based Big Y said in a written statement.
The store now offers tobacco products, which it did not before. There are also quick meal solutions, snacks, beverages, lottery tickets, greeting cards, balloons and gift cards.
A visit Thursday revealed more customer seating at tables, as well as checkout clerks. Self-checkout, which is still available, was the only option before. Milk, fruits and vegetables remain on the shelves. But gone are canned goods and some other items.
“We’re always listening to our customers,” said Nicole D’Amour Schneider, senior vice president of retail operations and customer experience in a statement. “This improved design is about delivering what our shoppers have asked for: more convenience, an effortless shopping experience and more of the items that will help make their daily lives easier.”
Big Y opened in Tower Square two years ago in July 2023, taking over what had most recently been a CVS with its own Main Street entrance.
The city subsidized the store within the downtown office and retail complex with a $1 million grant funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. The grant was meant to support the opening of a full-service grocery store downtown. The neighborhood had been identified as a food desert , or an area lacking fresh groceries.
The updated store hours are: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
