Cape Cod Bay sees 10 white shark sightings from the air in a single day
Over the past week, around the same number of white sharks were spotted around parts of Cape Cod on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The big difference is that all 10 of the sharks seen on Tuesday were isolated to one area, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy based in Chatham.
Around 31 sharks were spotted around Cape Cod over the last week, the conservancy's app Sharktivity stated. One sign of shark predation was also spotted during this timeframe.
The conservancy has tagged and named white sharks typically seen swimming around the Cape's coasts. These acoustic tags transmit data from shark detections in real time, with the results appearing on Sharktivity.
Hen was the first tagged shark seen over the last week. Initially tagged on Nov. 8, 2020, she measures at 11 and a half feet in length. Hen was seen off Nauset Beach in Eastham on Monday night at around 9:47 p.m.
The bulk of the week's sightings were split between Tuesday and Wednesday. All of the sightings on Tuesday were isolated to Cape Cod Bay when 10 sharks were spotted from the air at around 5:15 p.m., according to the app. The sizes of these sharks varied between 5 and 15 feet long.
On Wednesday, 13 sharks made up the 14 shark sightings that day, including two named sharks. Jimbo, a 9-foot-long white shark initially tagged on Oct. 11, 2023, was spotted off North Beach Island in Chatham at around 8:15 a.m.
Later that day, the 11-foot-long male white shark Baobab returned to the Cape. First, he was detected swimming off Maguire Landing Beach in Wellfleet at around 2:45 p.m. Just over an hour later, at around 3:54 p.m., he was detected off Newcomb Hollow Beach also in Wellfleet.
The sign of shark predation was photographed on Thursday. A dead seal with a shark bite was seen on Chatham Lighthouse Beach at around 8:33 p.m.
