A Hyannis man was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman after a date and was sentenced to prison, Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois' office said Friday.

Following a six-day trial in Barnstable Superior Court, a jury found Furkan Ergen, 28, guilty of three counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over the age of 14 on June 30, Galibois' office said in a statement.

Superior Court Associate Justice Michael Cahillane sentenced Ergen to 14 and a half to 16 years in prison, with a probationary period to start Friday.

Galibois is "grateful to the victim for her courage in coming forward and participating in the legal process," his office said.

On July 23, 2024, a woman called Barnstable police and said she was assaulted inside an apartment, the statement read. Officers met with her and it was reported that she had gone out with Ergen earlier that night.

Ergen brought her to his apartment, "where he proceeded to force himself on her and sexually assault her," the statement read. The woman escaped and hid outside in a wooded area before she called the police.
