CHICOPEE — Two candidates will vie to become Chicopee's next c ity collector .
Rajesh "Raj" Sanghvi, longtime businessman, led Tuesday's preliminary election with 795 votes, or 37.5%. In second was Sandra Ann Peret, nurse and longtime School Committee member, with 771 votes, or 36.3%, according to official results from the City Clerk's Office.
They will go head-to-head in November's municipal election.
Fred T. Krampits, longtime city councilman and third candidate for the collector position, will not move forward. He received 26% of the votes, according to the results.
Chicopee has 43,938 registered voters; roughly 4.9% of voters, or 2,136 people, showed up to the polls Tuesday, according to the clerk's office.
"It was about what I was expecting," said Keith Rattell, city clerk. "There wasn't much on the ballot and if a race doesn't generate much interest, it's common to not see that many people go to the polls."
There were five write-in votes and 13 blank votes, according to the results.
In addition to the collector's office, November's election will feature races for the assessor's office, at-large City Council, council positions in Wards 2, 3 and 5 and School Committee at-large.
Mayor John Vieau is running uncontested.
