A months-long closure of a Boston Logan Airport runway could cause flight delays over the next two months, according to Massport.

The closure of runway 9-27 began on Sept. 2 and is set to last for 75 days in total, Massport said in a press release . By Thursday evening, 33% of the day's flights out of Logan Airport had been delayed, according to a flight tracking website .

"While this runway is closed, there will be an impact on the number of planes that can land and take off at Boston Logan," Massport wrote in the release. "This could cause delays, especially if there are other impacts due to the weather or diversions, among other situations."

The ongoing closure is the first of two 75-day closures that have been planned to allow for the installation of a "vital" new safety system meant to stop planes that have overshot the runway, Massport said. The second closure will begin sometime after July 1, 2026.

"Due to the geography around the airport, this system is extremely important and is a FAA-approved method for achieving safety standards," Massport wrote. "This system is used at airports around the world and has prevented innumerable serious accidents."

This safety feature is already in use on two other runways at the Boston airport, according to Massport. The system does not extend the runway or change its operational capacity.
