A new ‘covfefe?’ Gov. Gavin Newsom trolls Trump over ‘Bela’ post

A short post from President Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform has prompted trolling from one of his political opponents, while also drawing comparisons to another social media post years ago that became a meme online.

At 9:31 a.m. on Sunday, Trump posted the word “Bela” with no other words or context. The post was still online as of Monday early afternoon.

Observers online analogized the post with a 2017 post on Twitter, now X, when Trump wrote, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.” Trump later deleted the tweet and posted again with reference to it.

“Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ???” Trump tweeted . “Enjoy!”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was already taking to X to mock the president when the “Bela” post went online. After Trump posted a photo of himself pointing at Russian President Vladimir Putin following a meeting in Alaska, Newsom’s press office posted a photo of the governor pointing at Trump’s chest following a contested meeting during the massive wildfires in Southern California earlier this year.

“TINY HANDS IS OUT HERE COPYING ME — BUT WITHOUT THE STAMINA (SAD), AND CERTAINLY WITHOUT THE ‘LOOKS.’ TOTAL BETA! — GCN," the post read, swapping Trump’s online signature with his initials with those of Newsom’s.

Newsom’s press office took a screenshot of the “Bela” post and used a similar Trump-style caption signed off by the governor.

“DONALD (TINY HANDS), HAS WRITTEN HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY THIS MORNING — UNFORTUNATELY (LOW IQ) HE SPELLED IT WRONG — ‘BETA,’" the post read. “SOON YOU WILL BE A ‘FIRED’ BETA BECAUSE OF MY PERFECT, ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GCN."

As of Monday, the White House has not clarified the president’s post. Trump continued to post throughout the day and into Monday morning, also with no clarity on what the post meant.
