Death investigation underway after teen girl gives birth at Far South Side elementary school

A death investigation was underway after a teenage girl gave birth to a baby who died at a Far South Side elementary school Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.
In a statement to the Tribune Wednesday night, Chicago police said a 15-year-old girl gave birth in the 600 block of East 131st Street in the city's Riverdale neighborhood at around 3 p.m.
Per the Cook County medical examiner's office, police pronounced someone dead at 630 E. 131st Street, which is the address for Aldridge Elementary School.
The teen was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition, while the child was pronounced dead on scene, police said.
Police provided no other information about the child. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
By 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, three police squad cars sat parked outside Aldridge Elementary. Several uniformed police officers could be seen walking inside the school as the neighborhood around the campus remained quiet.
An LED sign outside the school flashed a series of messages, from reminders that this week was homecoming to a note about early dismissal the day before Halloween.
Chicago Public Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday night.
Calumet Area detectives were investigating.
