What does Canada really think of Trump? An Ontario politician takes the gloves off
Ontario Premier Doug Ford didn't hold back when asked by Wolf Blitzer about what Canadians think about President Donald Trump.
"He's probably the most disliked politician in the world in Canada," Ford said of Trump during an interview with the CNN anchor. "Because he's attacked his closest family member, and that's the way we look on it."
The relationship between the United States and Canada has become increasingly strained during the second Trump administration.
At the beginning of his term, Trump placed tariffs on goods from Canada. A supporter of tariffs, Trump has previously touted them as a means to bring back U.S. manufacturing and bring in tax revenue.
In response, Canada slapped tariffs on $20.7 billion of American goods in March.
On July 31, Trump signed an executive order increasing the tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35%, going into effect on Aug. 1.
A White House press release states that Trump raised the tariffs because Canada had "failed to cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl and other illicit drugs, and it has retaliated against the United States for the President's actions to address this unusual and extraordinary threat to the United States."
"We love the Americans," Ford said during his interview. "It's unfortunate President Trump decided to go down this road."
In addition to the tit-for-tat tariffs, Trump has repeatedly suggested that Canada should become the 51st state .
Ford has been an outspoken critic of Trump's actions during his second term and has continued to call for retaliatory tariffs against the United States.
"You can't have tariffs on one side and not the other. I still stand by what I say — dollar for dollar, tariff for tariff. They understand strength, not weakness, and we should never, ever roll over and be weak," Ford said.
