Donald Trump approval ratings: analyst says Trump fares better than eight years ago
A polling analyst says President Donald Trump's overall approval rating is better now than it was eight years ago.
Nate Silver, the founder of the now-defunct opinion polling analysis website FiveThirtyEight.com, has been tracking the 47th president's approval on his Silver Bulletin Substack .
Trump's approval rating now stands at 44.2% while his disapproval rating is at 52.2%, according to Silver's tracker. The difference between Trump's approval and disapproval gives him a net approval of -8.
While Trump's net approval is low, it is also higher than it was at this time in 2017, according to Silver. Eight years ago, Trump, who had entered the first year of his presidency, had a net approval of -16.7, Silver said.
"To be clear, these are bad results for Trump," Silver said of the president's current approval rating. "His handling of the economy this time around is substantially less popular than his term one approach. But when it comes to overall approval, Trump is still more popular now than he was eight years ago."
In terms of policy, Trump's net approval on immigration is -5, according to Silver. The president's approval is also underwater over the issues of trade and the economy, stuck at net -16 each, Silver said.
Trump's overall net approval rating did improve over the past two weeks.
Before Tuesday's numbers, Trump's net approval rating was -9.4 two weeks ago, according to Silver. His current numbers, however, are worse than they were three weeks ago, when he had a net approval rating of -7.5, Silver said.
