Harry Enten, CNN’s chief data analyst, issued the warning after examining the new poll numbers that reveal Republican-leaning Independents abandoning Donald Trump at a staggering rate. This group has long anchored Trump’s coalition, but the poll suggests that foundation is crumbling rapidly. “We are talking about a very important block [of voters] for the president of the United States—that is Republican-leaning Independents. That is what’s going on,” Enten said.
The numbers illustrate the severity of the slide. During Trump’s first term, nearly three-quarters of Republican-leaning Independents backed him at this stage. Now, only half do. Enten described the fall as “Down he goes — an absolute collapse.”
The new poll shows a 20-point plunge among voters who traditionally were on Trump’s side. The analyst noted that the president has dropped “down into the deep blue sea” when comparing current approval ratings to his 2024 electoral performance.
In November 2024, Trump got 91 percent of the vote from Independents who lean Republican, crushing Kamala Harris among this cohort. Today, his support within the same group barely exceeds 50 percent. “I believe that is a 38-point drop. A 38-point drop from where he was in the 2024 election,” Enten said.
Trump’s overall disapproval rating has hit 62 percent, a record for his presidency. A punishing news cycle continues to batter the White House, as the war goes on with Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is still closed off, and the gas prices climb steadily upward. Voters blame the president for higher living costs, and polls consistently register that same anxiety. Additional turbulence has come from the controversial AI Jesus photo and persistent questions about the 79-year-old president’s health and fitness for office.
