Evansville man arrested on warrant in 2023 attempted murder case
EVANSVILLE – Nearly three years after the shooting in which he's accused, and more than a year after Evansville police secured a warrant for his arrest, an Evansville man has been booked into the Vanderburgh County jail on a charge of attempted murder.
Jail records show Jahkei Damerius Mitchell, 23, was entered into custody just before 11 a.m. Thursday on $150,000 bond. Investigators issued a warrant for his arrest Dec. 12, 2024 on a Level 1 felony charge of attempted murder.
Javeon Yorel Cox, now 22, was also arrested on an attempted murder charge in the same case on the same day officials filed the warrant for Mitchell. A Vanderburgh Superior Court jury found Cox not guilty after a trial in November.
Court records didn't reflect Mitchell's arrest as of Thursday afternoon.
A shooting in June 2023
The shooting that sparked the case unfolded on June 3, 2023 in the 600 block of Adams Avenue. According to the probable cause affidavit, Evansville police investigators responded to a shots-fired run and found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He ultimately survived.
Police later obtained surveillance footage from a nearby home. It reportedly showed the victim parking in the neighborhood and exiting his vehicle. As he walked toward a house, a dark-colored SUV creeped behind him.
"As the vehicle gets close to (the victim), gunshots begin to be fired from the driver's window," the affidavit states.
A person then reportedly exited the passenger side of the SUV with a handgun and rapidly fired as they moved. The ammunition was fired so quickly that detectives believed the gun had been equipped with a conversion device.
According to the affidavit, tips led detectives to a social media post that allegedly a man police later identified as Mitchell holding a gun affixed with such a device. The caption reportedly referred to a "strike" on an "opp."
As of Thursday, no initial hearing had been scheduled for Mitchell.
