Franklin Community Co-op thaws SNAP freeze with 15% discount on Food for All program
GREENFIELD — For the duration of a potential freeze on food stamps , a Greenfield co-op will thaw the community with an increased discount on food.
The Franklin Community Co-op, will be increasing its Food for All program discount to 15% on all purchases, excluding alcohol, to people who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), women, infants and children (WIC), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
"Our Food for All program was set up to help low-income community members access good food for themselves and their families," said Caitlin von Schmidt, the co-op's outreach and communications manager. "In this time of even greater need, we feel it is important to do what we can to ease the considerable burden placed on SNAP recipients by the freeze."
The Co-op's Food for All program already offers 10% discounts to people receiving any of those benefits for one year at Green Fields and McCusker's Markets in Greenfield which can be renewed after a year if a participant is still receiving those benefits.
According to the statement, this increase will last the duration of the freeze, and participants do not have to be member-owners of the co-op.
People interested and who qualify for the program can sign up using the Food for All brochure at Green Fields Market in Greenfield or McCusker's Market in Shelburne Falls, or online at the co-op's website at https://franklincommunity.coop/food-for-all-program/ .
