Greater Holyoke Chamber seeks donations as SNAP cuts hit families

HOLYOKE ― The Greater Holyoke Chamber is asking the community to step up to fill the hunger gap caused by delays or stoppage of SNAP aid to recipients.

Donations can be dropped off at the chamber's Holyoke office Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment, with more extended hours coming soon.

Top needs include pantry staples such as beans, rice, pasta, sauce, grains, oatmeal, nut butters and shelf-stable milk. Canned fruits, vegetables, meats and soups are also requested. Baby items, like food and diapers, along with personal care toiletries, are in high demand.

The chamber is also taking cash, checks and online payments to buy nonperishable food and grocery gift cards. Organizers said the money will help families now and in the weeks ahead.

About 43% of Holyoke residents recently lost SNAP benefits or had them interrupted, leaving many struggling to afford basics. The chamber said it works to support both local businesses and the community. As organizer of the Holyoke Farmers Market, it has seen how business success and community health go hand in hand, a statement from the chamber said.
