Help Environmental Studies Council build new enclosure for alligator snapping turtle Oscar
Treasure Coast nonprofits that research, protect, restore and advocate for clean water, especially the Indian River Lagoon , need more than holiday cheer to continue their missions.
TCPalm's annual Giving Days fundraiser highlights how you can help these nonprofit organizations continue their important environmental work. Today, we feature the:
Environmental Studies Council
The Environmental Studies Council was established in 1978 to support, protect and enhance the unique environmental educational programs of the Environmental Studies Center in Martin County.
-
Wish: Funding for a new covered area for Oscar, a beloved resident alligator snapping turtle at the Environmental Studies Center in Jensen Beach
-
How it will help: Oscar's enclosure is in full sun, which contributes to excessive algae growth. Adding a covered area will reduce algae buildup, provide shade, and improve the overall quality of his environment —ensuring a healthier and more natural space for both Oscar and the students who learn about him.
-
Cost: $3,500 for cement, lumber and roofing materials. Jensen Beach High School engineering students will design and build the structure.
-
How to donate: Call the Environmental Studies Council at 772-219-1887 ext. 59121 or email info@escmc.org . You can donate online (visit escmc.org and click on donations) or mail a check to the Environmental Studies Council at 2900 N.E. Indian River Drive in Jensen Beach, FL 34957.
