A hiker was injured after plummeting off a trail in rugged terrain at a popular North Carolina waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains Friday, rescuers said.

On social media, Burke Rescue didn't say how far the hiker fell from the recently reopened Plunge Basin Trail or disclose their injury.

The National Parks Service describes hiking the 1.2-mile roundtrip trail as easy to moderate . Visitors view Lower Linville Falls from the trail, which ends at a viewing platform level with the top of the falls.

"Burke Rescue and Burke EMS worked together to safely package the patient into a Stokes basket, carrying them a half-mile over rugged terrain back to the parking lot for hospital transport," according to Burke Rescue.

Burke Rescue thanked a member of Linville-Central Rescue Squad who was in the area, along with bystanders "who jumped right in to help."
