One of Lubbock's iconic ice cream shops has closed its doors, ending an 18-year run of sweet memories.

Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe, 3404 34th St., announced via social media late Friday night that it would be closing, initially saying Sunday would be its final day of business but later announcing even its final day was canceled.

"Unfortunately, we have been forced to close our doors earlier than we had planned, and we will not be opening today," the shop announced in a social media post late Sunday morning.

The shop's owners did not immediately disclose the sudden nature of their closure.

"This was not an easy decision, and everything has happened so rapidly," the business stated on social media.

The initial closure announcement, made around 11 p.m. Friday, had initially invited people for one last hurrah from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday. The shop's antiques and decor will be available for purchase, although further details were not immediately available.

Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe took inspiration from the 1940s and 50s. It opened in 2008 and moved to its current location in 2010 under the ownership of founder Darryl Holland. He sold it in 2021 to Wesley Trook, a then Texas Tech student who has since graduated.

"Holly Hop has been part of so many chapters of my own life," Trook said through the post. "During my time here, I graduated from high school, earned my bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Tech, met and married Elizabet, and became a dad to Charlie. Through those milestones and so many moments in between, this little shop has been a constant. Saying goodbye to a place so woven into our family's story is incredibly difficult, and we are grateful to everyone who has been part of it."

The announcement, despite the late hour, garnered quick attention across social media, with many sharing their memories of the Lubbock mainstay in the comments.

"Thank you for making us part of your birthdays, your first dates, your family traditions, and your ordinary afternoons that needed something sweet," the business stated. "Thank you for bringing your children and grandchildren, for telling your friends about us, and for coming back time and time again."
