Several employees of a car wash company were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday, according to the neighborhood's city councilor and media reports.

City Councilor Liz Breadon cited community members and said that 8 employees of the Allston Car Wash on Cambridge Street were detained as part of an ICE raid.

"My understanding is that those detained were not permitted by ICE to retrieve their documents from their lockers during the raid," Breadon said in a statement.

Mike Delaney, co-owner of the car wash, said that agents detained nine immigrants who worked at the facility, according to WGBH.

"Our main concern is with our employees that were detained," Delaney told the outlet. "We really don't want to do anything that would stir the hornet's nest."

ICE did not return a request for comment.

The manager said eight out of 22 employees were detained Tuesday morning, and that many had legal status, but were unable to get their documents for agents, The Boston Globe reported . The outlet did not identify the manager.

"Some people left their property, their work permits in their lockers here," he told the outlet. "I could bring it to them and get them released. But I don't know where they are."

The manager described a show of force by agents, with about 17 vehicles and an armored vehicle involved, the Globe reported.

"This is kidnapping — plain and simple," Breadon said. "It is a horrifying chapter in the illegal and vindictive targeting of Boston by ICE and the Trump Administration."

Breadon said she is working with members of Congress from Massachusetts and local immigrants' rights organizations to connect impacted family members with resources.

Last month, ICE and its federal partners said they apprehended more than 1,400 people during a weeks-long immigration enforcement operation throughout Massachusetts. Of those arrests, 600 had criminal convictions or pending charges or were known fugitives, ICE said.
