Iconic New England pizza restaurant coming to The Big E, but only for a few days
If you're familiar with New England pizza lore , you've probably heard of Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana .
But did you know the iconic restaurant is bringing its pizza to The Big E for the first time ever – but only for a few days.
Frank Pepe's will be setting up at the Connecticut Building at The Big E from Tuesday, Sept. 16, to Thursday, Sept. 18, to serve its famous New Haven-style pizza at the fair.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Frank Pepe's, which got its start in New Haven. In recent years, the restaurant has expanded and now has 17 locations across seven states. That includes three locations in Massachusetts: Chestnut Hill, Burlington and Watertown.
As its highway signs declare to those entering the state, Connecticut has declared itself as the "Pizza Capital of the United States," thanks in large part to the impact of New Haven-style pizza.
Frank Pepe's played a huge role in popularizing that style, known for its thin crust and for being cooked in high-temperature coal-fired ovens.
Other pizza-themed attractions at the Big E's Connecticut Building include Randy's Wooster Street Pizza, info on the Connecticut Pizza Trail and a "pizza throne" created by artist Michael Pollack of the New Haven Pizza Club.
