GAP, Pa. (WHTM) -- After just over two decades, a branch library in eastern Lancaster County is closing and leaders are laying blame on the recent failed tax referendum.

The Gap Branch Library will soon close. It opened in 2004 in the Houston Run Center just outside the village of Gap in Salisbury Township.

It is a branch of the Intercourse Library and officials said "the impact is significant" regarding the failure of the library tax referendum.

"We have no choice but to close the Gap Branch Library," the library said in a Facebook post. "Closing this branch is a genuine disappointment for patrons, staff, and the Library Board of Trustees. However, without sufficient funding, we can no longer sustain two locations."

"We remain grateful to our generous donors and to each of the three townships for their annual contributions," they added. "Their support will matter more than ever as we scale back and consolidate our operations at the main library in Intercourse."

Had the tax passed, property owners would have paid on average $200 per year towards the county library system. It was voted down by a wide margin.
